Man charged after opening fire outside Kansas Planned Parenthood, allegedly pressured woman to get an abortion

(The Lion)–A man has been arrested on felony charges after firing a gun outside a Kansas Planned Parenthood where he was allegedly forcing a woman to get an abortion.

Dmarieon Matthews drove a woman and two children to Overland Park’s Planned Parenthood in Johnson County on March 14 where he was confronted by a group of protesters.

The woman refused to get out of the vehicle despite Matthews’ angry shouting, the pro-life advocacy group Abortion is Murder Kansas (AIM KS) wrote in a news release.

Matthews and the woman were already arguing on the way to the facility, but the situation intensified when protesters got involved, The Western Journal reports.

“Anyone who [has] prayed outside of an abortion clinic, can testify to the fact that coercion happens all the time there and they know it,” one person commented.

A video of the incident shows AIM KS activists standing on the sidewalk in front of the Planned Parenthood building along with a group of contrasting pro-abortion protesters. Pro-life activist Stone Shelnutt was at the scene and remembers hearing someone yelling in the parking lot.

“Sir, can I ask you why you’re here today?” Shelnutt asked Matthews from the sidewalk. “Sir, did you bring somebody here to get an abortion?”

In the video, pro-abortion counter-protesters started yelling at Shelnutt through a megaphone, telling him to “shut up” and “mind your own business.”

Matthews became increasingly agitated, allegedly pointing a gun at some of the pro-life advocates in the crowd. He fired the gun once at the ground and drove away with the woman and children still in the car, according to The Journal.

An Overland Park officer quickly found and arrested Matthews as he was exiting onto the highway.

“The absurdity of the day was that people on the outside who were threatened received the help and response of probably 10-12 officers, while the most innocent, the most vulnerable were murdered that very day inside the building, and they don’t care,” Shelnutt said.

AIM KS members estimated at least seven abortions took place inside the Planned Parenthood building on the same day of the incident.

Matthews is facing felony charges of aggravated assault and two counts of child endangerment, as well as a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession, according to KSHB 41. He’s being held in the Johnson County Adult Detention Center on a $50,000 bond with a hearing scheduled for Thursday, KSHB said.
