Missouri’s Harry S. Truman Museum to offer free admission Memorial Day weekend

The Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum in Independence, Missouri, is offering free admission this Memorial Day weekend in honor of America’s 250th birthday.

The Kansas City Royals Foundation made free admission possible by donating $12,500 to the Truman Library Institute, which strives to make civic education and public history more accessible.

“The Kansas City Royals Foundation’s generous support of free admission over Memorial Day weekend reflects the very best of civic partnership – opening the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum’s doors for families, students, veterans and visitors from across our region,” Truman Library Institute Executive Director Alex Burden said in a press release.

This weekend will be the last chance for visitors to see a special exhibit called “Opening the Vault: The Story of Us” at the museum, which is on loan from the National Archives and Records Administration. The exhibit showcases artifacts from the Louisiana Purchase, Missouri Compromise, North Atlantic Treaty, the Manhattan Project Notebook and more.

The beloved museum was recently renovated and displays books, papers and other historical pieces in relation to former President Harry S. Truman.

“President Truman wanted his library to be a source of education about leadership and democracy, and the Royals are proud to help that mission reach more in our community,” Royals CEO John Sherman said. “His legacy is a critical piece of American history, and particularly relevant here in his home region, and now as we celebrate an important anniversary for our country.”

The museum will be open the following hours:

  • Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There will be special activities on Monday including patriotic music in the courtyard and a wreath-laying ceremony at 1 p.m., as well as a cannon firing demonstration by the Missouri National Guard at 2 p.m.
