Report: Kansas City Chiefs seeking proposals for domed stadium in Kansas

The Kansas City Chiefs have asked architects for proposals on a new domed 65,000-seat stadium on the Kansas side of the metro, radio host Pete Mundo reported Friday.

Mundo told his KCMO listeners the news doesn’t mean the National Football League team is going to Kansas near the site of The Legends outdoor shopping and entertainment complex – only that it wants to see what that might look like.

After sitting on the story for a week and a half or two weeks “waiting for more sources and more confirmation on this story,” he said, “I can confirm that the Chiefs have an RFP out – a request for proposal – to build a new stadium at 435 and 70 in KCK.

“It would be a dome stadium, 65,000 seats, a retractable grass field like what they do in Vegas.

“This does not mean they’re going to Kansas. It doesn’t. It just means that there is an RFP, a request for proposal, out on the streets. It has been thrown out there to multiple architecture firms who are obviously being asked to bid and throw their ideas out there and share proposals and things of that nature.

“And that if this thing does come to fruition on the Kansas side of the state line, there will be two finalists who will be picked early next year for what they would dub a ‘design competition.’”

Mundo later posted on X that, “The team will whittle down from 10 firms to two by early next year for a ‘design competition.’”

Although breaking the news of the Chiefs’ serious look at the Kansas location, Mundo says he still finds it more likely they’ll stay where they are.

“If I was a betting man … my gut still tells me that they stay where they’re at – at Arrowhead Stadium. But at least there are conversations and RFPs being put out there on the street to various firms and there’s NDA’s [Non-disclosure agreements] all over this thing.

“But there is at least movement on the Kansas side of the state line as they consider some type of a dome stadium 65,000 seats out there by The Legends.”

Both the Chiefs and Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals are considering moves from their joint Truman Sports Complex, which they’ve shared since 1972.

The Royals, expected to be the first to make a change, have yet to announce a location. The team has been looking at a downtown location, one in North Kansas City and a move to the Kansas side near 119th and Nall Avenue.
