(The Lion) — Christian authorities from across the nation are urging President Trump to tighten federal restrictions on mail order abortion pills.
Forty Baptist leaders from 22 states, led by Family Research Council President Tony Perkins, gave the president a letter petitioning him to undo the lax precedent of the Biden-Harris administration.
“We respectfully urge your immediate action to stop the mail-order distribution of the abortion drug mifepristone, which now accounts for more than 60 percent of all U.S. abortions,” the letter read.
“Enabled by the previous administration’s rollback of FDA safety protocols, this dangerous drug has caused serious adverse events in nearly 11 percent of users and poses grave risks to women, especially when dispensed without in-person screening or ultrasound evaluation.”
The authors thanked Trump for his prior work defending unborn life – notably facilitating the overturning of Roe v. Wade, defunding Planned Parenthood, and reversing the abuses of the FACE Act, which Biden used to prosecute pro-life advocates.
Since Roe v. Wade was overturned, 19 states have passed strict or total abortion bans. Only 9 states have zero restrictions.
However, the overall number of abortions has risen slightly due to a significant uptick in mail order abortions.
In 2022, only 7% of abortions were done by mail. But by 2024, that jumped to 25%.
This practice is enabled by “shield laws,” which 22 states have passed in the name of reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare.
UCLA Law explains shield laws as “legal protections for patients, health care providers, and people assisting in the provision of certain health care in states where that care is legal from the reach of states with civil, criminal, and professional consequences related to that care.”
Simply put, shield laws make it “legal” to provide an abortion to a woman in another state, even if that state has ruled it illegal.
Under this system, it is dangerously easy for women to receive powerful drugs with no medical oversight.
As a test, a journalist ordered the abortion pill online. In just five minutes, she completed an online order form without ever speaking to a medical professional. She received a pill in the mail within days, costing as little as $90.
Despite the propaganda of the abortion industry, these pills are far from safe.
A recent study found nearly 11% of women experienced a “serious adverse event” after using the pill. Such events included sepsis, fallopian tube rupture, hemorrhaging and infection.
The drug claims to only have a rate of less than 0.5% for serious adverse events.
To address this, the 40 Christian leaders are asking Trump to reevaluate and tighten FDA requirements for mifepristone, the main ingredient in the abortion pill.
They also asked for Trump to enforce the Comstock Act, a federal law that forbids the mail service from carrying obscene materials or certain materials related to crime or abortion.
