A 65-year-old man is recovering from surgery after a bison charged him in Yellowstone National Park, tossing him eight feet into the air Friday.
Carl Isom-McDaniel, of Kendall, Washington, was visiting the park with his grandson. The two were observing a lone male bison from a distance at the Bridge Bay Campground in the park’s southeast section when the animal stood and charged, according to the New York Post.
“The bison was pumping his legs and pumping his head and exhibiting very aggressive behavior,” said Mike MacLeod, a local wildlife photographer, who captured the attack on video, which has now gone viral.
MacLeod told ABC, noting that he attempted to distract the animal and eventually rushed to Isom-McDaniel’s aid.
Isom-McDaniel suffered multiple broken bones but was “in good spirits, joking,” according to the New York Times. Park emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and transported him to a nearby hospital.
Isom-McDaniel’s family said he had a successful surgery and is expected to recover, MacLeod said.
