Media on both the left and the right have raised questions about former Trump administration official Elaine Chao’s trip to China three days after her husband had a major heart attack.
The questions center on the information vacuum surrounding Chao’s husband, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, one of the Senate’s most powerful members, as well as the trip itself.
McConnell has remained hospitalized for more than three weeks after the coronary emergency, while Chao reportedly traveled to Beijing days later and met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, local Kentucky news station WLKY reported.
Previously, Chao was transportation secretary under President Donald Trump and labor secretary under President George W. Bush.
“The question now is about national security,” said independent journalist Desiree Townsend.
Townsend wondered, given McConnell’s condition, about the security of classified intelligence, legislation and other sensitive material McConnell kept.
“And given the timing of Chao’s meeting with China’s vice president, what exactly was discussed?” she added.
Emergency dispatch audio released by Townsend and reviewed by mainstream news media indicated responders were called to McConnell’s Washington home for an unconscious person.
Other recordings referenced cardiac arrest and CPR, CBS News reported.
McConnell’s office has released only limited information about his condition, saying he is continuing to recover and remains engaged with Senate business, but has not disclosed the nature of the illness or a timeline for his return, the Washington Examiner reported.
The former GOP majority leader has not issued a press release since June 9 despite major developments in Congress and the courts that would ordinarily draw comment from him, including a Supreme Court campaign finance ruling tied closely to one of his signature political issues, the Examiner noted.
Equally alarming, media outlets have not been able to independently confirm Chao’s current whereabouts.
The Heartlander called Chao’s cellphone number and sent an inquiry to her email address but has not received a reply.
Chinese state media said the meeting with Chao concerned U.S.-China relations and cooperation.
“Chao said maintaining stable U.S.-China relations serves the interests of all parties, and expressed the willingness to continue making efforts to promote practical cooperation and people-to-people exchanges between the United States and China,” noted a copy of the press release from the meeting by the Chinese Embassy.
The State Department and McConnell’s office did not comment on Chao’s trip or McConnell’s current condition when contacted by People magazine.
“Sen. McConnell is still working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery,” McConnell spokesperson Stephanie Penn said in a statement on June 22, People reported, noting the senator would not be present to vote.
Chao’s business ties to China
On the right, the trip has largely fueled questions about whether Chao was acting only in a private capacity and why she was meeting with a senior Chinese official while her husband was hospitalized.
The Gateway Pundit said Chao’s family shipping company has long-standing ties to Beijing-linked banks, ties that drew ethics scrutiny during her Trump Cabinet tenure, which led Trump to publicly criticize the family for profiting from China.
Chao also resigned from the Trump administration after the Jan. 6 protest in 2021.
“As I’m sure is the case with many of you, it has deeply troubled me in a way that I simply cannot set aside,” said Chao at the time.
On the left, the questions have focused more directly on McConnell’s ability to continue serving and succession issues.
Charles Booker, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, called for transparency after conflicting accounts emerged about McConnell’s hospitalization.
“It’s time we know what’s happening,” Booker said, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. “When we don’t know if our senator is alert, conscious or capable of serving, that’s not a partisan question. It’s a Kentucky one.”
But right-wing media personalities have also questioned both McConnell’s condition and Chao’s location.
“High level source close to the White House tells me ‘Mitch McConnell is officially brain dead. He’s not coming back,’” said Laura Loomer before adding that Chao “fled the country to China.”
Similarly, the reliably left-wing Daily Beast asked McConnell’s representatives for Chao’s travel dates, the purpose of her China meetings, whether McConnell is conscious, whether he’s resumed any duties and who’s overseeing his office during his hospitalization.
Potential succession crisis
The potential succession crisis stemming from McConnell’s various health problems has been a multiyear concern.
Thanks to legislation passed in 2024, Kentucky law requires the governor to declare a special election to serve out the term until the new Senate is sworn in in January 2027 if McConnell dies before Aug. 3, the Daily Beast claimed.
If that’s the case, it’s unclear how it would work logistically.
The Daily Beast claims a vacancy election would be scheduled to coincide with the Nov. 3 general election.
Newsweek said the question was “unresolved … how election officials would administer a vacancy occurring close to the end of the senator’s term.”
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, originally vetoed the vacancy legislation in 2024, citing constitutional concerns at both the state and federal levels. But it’s unclear whether he would actually challenge it.
Practically speaking, the question becomes moot with the November general election, even if someone has to serve a rump term to fill out McConnell’s remaining time in the Senate.
The remaining question is what happened to Chao.
“Why did Elaine Chao, Mitch McConnell’s wife, run straight to China to meet with high ranking government officials, three days after he went into cardiac arrest?” asked Townsend.
