The Bible-based series that follows the rise of ancient Israel’s greatest king has been renewed for a third season.
Prime Video announced Friday that House of David will return for Season 3, telling the story of David in exile as he runs for his life and waits for God’s promise to be fulfilled. A news release said the new season will explore the “true cost of destiny – the betrayals endured, the identities shed, and the sacrifices demanded of a hero before he can rise to the throne.”
House of David is a Wonder Project/Amazon MGM Studios series and was created by Jon Erwin (Young Washington, I Can Only Imagine) and Jon Gunn (The Case for Christ, Ordinary Angels).
Seasons 1 and 2 are available on both Prime Video and Wonder Project.
“We are incredibly grateful to fans around the world who have embraced House of David,” Erwin and Gunn said in a statement. “Season 3 follows David through one of the most defining chapters of his life, and we’re honored to share this next chapter alongside our partners at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. Whether audiences have known David through Scripture or are encountering him from a fresh perspective, we hope the series continues to reveal why his story has resonated across generations.”
The news release hinted at next season’s storyline, saying it will explore the period when David was “forced to hide among his enemies” – an apparent reference to his time living among the Philistines. Season 1 told the story of David’s rise from shepherd boy to giant slayer, while Season 2 focused on his friendship with Jonathan and his growing conflict with King Saul.
Michael Iskander, who stars in the lead role, said his own faith has grown by portraying David. Iskander is a Christian.
“He’s a biblical figure, and he’s a real person that lived – he’s a historical figure, and I’m inspired by his faith and his level of trust in God,” Iskander said.
House of David is Wonder Project’s flagship series, although the company made headlines again in recent days for its role in producing Young Washington, the hit historical drama in theaters. Wonder Project offers a faith-and-family-focused subscription service on Prime Video, also called Wonder Project.
Some 40 million people streamed Season 1, demonstrating that its more famous counterpart, The Chosen, was not a one-hit phenomenon – and that the audience for Bible-based television extends well beyond a single series.
