A Mexican, undocumented immigrant died from gunshot wounds Tuesday after allegedly resisting arrest and using his car to attack an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Houston, Texas.

ICE agents performed a vehicle stop at approximately 6:50 a.m. CT in Magnolia Park, according to the Houston Chronicle. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, an illegal immigrant, allegedly rammed an ICE vehicle, ignored verbal commands and “weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer,” the Department of Homeland Security said in a post on X.

In response, the ICE officer fired “his weapon in self-defense,” the DHS post reads.

Araujo was hit and transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died, according to the post.

“My father did not deserve this,” Araujo’s son, Ronaldo Salgado, said in a statement to the Chronicle, explaining at a press conference Wednesday that his father was seeking his legal work permit after 35 years of building homes in the Houston suburbs.

ICE said the shooting occurred during a “targeted enforcement operation to arrest an illegal alien,” but did not specify whether Araujo was the operation’s target.

Protesters gathered Tuesday night near the site of the shooting, and a news conference and vigils will be held Wednesday, according to the Chronicle.

The Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General is investigating the case, and FBI Houston is investigating the alleged assault against an officer.

The shooting is the second by an ICE officer in the last week, the Chronicle reported. Clemente Lara-Hernandez, an illegal immigrant, “weaponized his car and rammed an ICE enforcement vehicle” in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, July 1, which prompted the shooting. Lara-Hernandez was not killed and remains at large.
