Olathe school district laments infamy of banning Charlie Kirk-style ‘FREEDOM’ shirts, but doesn’t explain decision

Olathe Public Schools has sent an email to staff and parents decrying the national attention it’s received for prohibiting staff from wearing Charlie Kirk-style “FREEDOM” shirts.

But as the Libs of TikTok X account that publicized the matter nationally notes in a new post, the Kansas City-area school district has yet to explain itself or why the shirts are banned.

The Heartlander has reached out again seeking comment, after an email to the district on Tuesday went unanswered.

Folks are wondering if the shirts violate a particular policy against politicking, which could be the case – although the district’s “Department of Culture and Belonging” offers “We All Belong Together” T-shirts and sweatshirts.

Oddly, a search of the website on Friday couldn’t turn up the page offering the shirts for sale. Two concerned citizens also reported being unable to find the page. The Heartlander has asked the district if that page has been taken down and if so, why.

Members of the district’s Diversity and Engagement Advisory Council — made up of staff, students, parents and community members — can be seen wearing the We All Belong Together shirts on the council’s website.

“As is often the case in social media, misinformation about the situation is spreading quickly,” the district’s mass email from Dr. Lachelle Sigg, deputy superintendent of administration and leadership.

“UPDATE,” the new Libs of TikTok post reports. “@olatheschools deputy superintendent sent a mass email accusing us of spreading ‘misinformation’ without explaining what any of the ‘misinformation’ is.

“We posted facts and they know that. But their actions are indefensible so they’re instead smearing us then claim to be the victim.

“Disgusting.”
