Family of American executed in Syria speaks out despite fears of retaliation

(The Lion) — The family of an American man from Oklahoma who was executed in Syria during the Druze massacres has confirmed his death.

Relatives of Hosam Saraya spoke with local News 4 on condition of anonymity, fearing retaliation.

Saraya was visiting his hometown of Sweida in southern Syria, his family said.

Saraya, his father, three uncles, a brother and a cousin were all killed in a raid on their home conducted by what the family said was “government-aligned militias,” according to News 4.

A photo of Saraya was posted to social media of him dressed in a suit, apparently in a university setting.

“Please meet Hosam Saraya. Hosam is a U.S. citizen who lives in Oklahoma and is a graduate of Oklahoma Christian University,” said the caption. “He’s also very dead. Hosam was visiting his family in Syria when he was executed along with his father, brother, uncles, and cousins.”

The family suspects he was targeted by the Islamic militia because of his Druze religion.

American-Israeli Druze, Rania Dean, said in an interview that Saraya and his male family members were taken out of the house and brought to the center of town so they could be publicly executed as a lesson to others.

The militia members attempted to appear from a Bedouin tribe to hide their affiliation with the government, she said. They ostensibly offered protection to the men in Saraya’s house to lure them to their deaths.

Dean added she’s shared proof with the U.S. State Department that the Syrian government was involved in the massacre.

Disturbing video from her account on X shows gunmen lining up at least a half a dozen male subjects all wearing casual clothes. They were then executed as they kneeled in the dirt in an urban location.

Viewers can see automatic weapons that were discharged on fully automatic settings for at least 15 seconds by at least six gunmen, one of whom yells at the end, “Allahu Akbar!”

Another video shows at least eight civilian men, including one purportedly to be Saraya, being frog marched down a street just prior to the execution. The men are being led by young militia members who look to be sporting shiny, new, government-supplied military gear, including weapons.

The militia members are laughing, and this video also ends in somebody shouting several times, “Allahu Akbar!”

The clothing positively identifies the civilian men being marched in the street and those executed as being the same people.

Friends say Saraya moved to Oklahoma City and got a master’s degree in accounting from Oklahoma Christian University.

“I’m definitely going to miss his just overall calmness and his sense of humor,” a source told local News 4. “People loved him and they terribly miss him.”

Politicians around Oklahoma closed ranks after the murder, as the Syrian government finds difficulty in denying its complicity in the massacre against the Druze last week.

U.S. Sen. James Lankford, an Oklahoma Republican who serves on the Senate intelligence committee, said he was “heartbroken by the death of Hosam Saraya.”

Sen. Markwayne Mullin, the junior senator from Oklahoma and also a Republican, is continuing the search for more information.

“We’ve learned that an American citizen from Oklahoma was brutally executed alongside his family members in Syria,” Mullin said. “I’m working with partners in the region to learn more, and we’re in touch with @GovStitt on this devastating situation. Our prayers are with the family at this time.”

“It’s extremely tragic on all levels,” a source familiar with Saraya told the News 4 station. “He has his mom back home, who is now left without her sons, or her husband.”
