(The Lion) — Prayer and strong leadership will save America, says U.S. Rep. Mark Alford, R-Missouri.
“Our nation is here because of the providence and protection of God Almighty, and yet we still have a role to play in helping shape this nation, because God isn’t done with us yet,” Alford told The Lion on Monday. “Each one of us here has a responsibility to not only represent their constituents, but also to help rebuild this country.”
And many elected officials are actively seeking God’s help.
Alford said 12 representatives meet with Speaker of the House Mike Johnson every Thursday to pray for him, the protection of the President and the nation. During one of those morning prayer times, Alford says the difficulty of passing a new House budget resolution came up.
“We prayed for God’s will to be done, and we prayed for a miracle,” Alford said. “I think it was in part a miracle that this thing passed. I want God to have a part in what we do. I want to leave room for Him to operate and to receive the glory due to Him.”
Alford said the biggest surprise of his past two and a half years on Capitol Hill is the number of Bible studies and number of people praying.
Before running for Congress, Alford spent 25 years anchoring Kansas City’s number one morning news show on Fox, according to his website.
“I believe God is in control,” Alford said. “I left Fox 4 three and a half years ago now. I let go and let God, and I have never been happier. I’ve never been more content. I have never had this much passion, focus, direction, drive, for anything I’ve ever done in my life.”
Alford is also focused on President Donald Trump’s America First agenda, explaining that the U.S. must be strong for not just its own sake, but for other nations.
“They need us to be there for them and for us to be strong,” Alford said. “We’ve got to get our debt under control. We’ve got to solve our problem of illegal immigration. We’ve got to turn around our culture, which I think President Trump is doing.”
Alford said Trump has demonstrated he will sacrifice any part of his life to defend America. He won’t be pushed around, and he will still stand for the U.S.
Alford said the chaos felt during the first 100 days of Trump’s administration is due to the president’s fierce leadership in turning America away from the dangerous direction it was headed.
“There’s chaos on the deck, but the reason there’s chaos is because our captain, Donald J. Trump has steered the ship of America away to avoid us hitting the reef and sinking,” Alford said. “We’re going to get to a point where we’re out in smooth waters, and we’re going to look back and think about this time right now, and will appreciate it even more.”
