Kansas church vandalism, satanic ‘black mass’ draw national outrage, including president’s

The president himself has taken notice of a vandalized church in Wichita, while Satanists plan a “black mass” on the Kansas Capitol grounds Friday.

The burglary and destruction at St. Patrick Catholic Church early Saturday appears to be an attack on both faith and nation: Not only were religious statues destroyed and a Satanic message left on the wall, but an American flag was burned as well.

Authorities say they’ve arrested 23-year-old Michael Angel Gonzalez in connection with the attack. Station KWCH reports he was booked on charges that include “criminal desecration, burglary, criminal damage to property, parole violation and three counts of contempt of court.”

Wichita police and fire are investigating, as well as the FBI and the ATF.

President Trump was asked about the attack on Monday.

“Well, we’re going to take a look,” Trump said. “I love Wichita. You know, I got big votes there. We won that state by a lot. We’ll take a look at that.”

On the heels of the Biden administration — which prosecuted pro-lifers and other people of faith to the fullest extent of the law, while letting over 100 attacks on churches and pro-life centers go largely unanswered — the federal government’s swift participation in the Wichita church investigation was welcome news to the faith community.

“This reprehensible act of vandalism will not be tolerated,” Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan told the media. “Our officers and investigators worked tirelessly to bring this suspect to justice.”

The Kansas Catholic Conference condemned the attack, calling it a hate crime.

“After forcing their way inside, statues were destroyed, glass smashed, and other extensive damage exacted upon this sacred space,” the conference wrote in a statement. “St. Patrick Church is a predominantly Latino parish situated in a working-class neighborhood of North-Central Wichita. …The FBI is investigating. A Satanic website was scrawled on a wall. This is the face of evil.”

National conservative leader Matt Schlapp, a native of Wichita, took note of the attack, as well as the planned Satanic “mass” in Topeka on Friday

“Wichita is my hometown,” Schlapp posted on X. “Let’s stop the Christian persecution by the left and the Mullahs initially fueled by BLM. The next outrage is an unholy black mass at the Capitol in Topeka. Thank you @realDonaldTrump @AGPamBondi @FBIDirectorKash.”

The black mass, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., is “a satanic version of the Catholic mass, meant to reflect our own pain and anger of us being subjected to religion that we never gave consent to,” Michael Stewart, founder and president of the Satanic Grotto, told the media.

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly has said she’ll reluctantly have to allow the event on the grounds, but not inside the Capitol.

“We will be entering the building and attempting to perform the mass, and if Capitol Police want to stop us, they will need to arrest us,” Stewart said.

The event’s Facebook page is even more combative.

“Between 10 am and 2pm, we expect there to be a dominating Catholic presence of (sic) the south steps of the capitol building,” it reads. “We will be counter protesting this group! this is where we want your support. Our fire and brimstone team is fierce and viscous (sic). We will make that crowd uncomfortable and we will drowned (sic) out their prayers. As a bonus we will hand out ‘mini black mass’ kits that be (sic) used anywhere any time! instructions included. They can stop one black mass but they cant stop us all.”

As for the satanists’ attempting to enter the building – at 11:30 a.m. – the Facebook page says, “We are committing a peaceful act of civil disobedience, this is an illegal act, we are thumbing our noses at the highest authority in our state. You do so at your own risk. …

“Join us at the Topeka Capitol building in Kansas as we dedicate the grounds and our legislature to the glory of Satan. We will be performing rites to the Black Mass and indulging in sacrilegious blaspheme. God will fall and Kansas will be embraced by the black flame of Lucifer.

“Hail Satan.”

While Stewart described satanists as “the scariest thing in the dark” in social media posts, he claims the event Friday won’t be scary.

What it will be is highly offensive and sacrilegious, according to horrified Catholic leaders.

The American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family, and Property (TFP) started a nationwide petition and has “coordinated a public ‘rally of reparation’ outside the Capitol, where Catholics can pray and offer atonement at the same time as the so-called ‘black mass,’” reports Catholicvote.org.

TFP’s petition argues the black mass “offends 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide, 426,000 Catholics in Kansas, and countless more God-loving Americans.

“Sacrilege is simply NOT free speech.”

Chuck Weber, executive director for the Kansas Catholic Conference, said “spiritual and legal responses are being explored.”

Weber told Catholicvote the event is “an insult to not only Catholics, but all people of good will.”

“The Catholic Bishops of Kansas ask that first and foremost, we pray for the conversion of those taking part in this event, as well as each person’s own conversion of heart during this sacred Season of Lent,” Weber said.
