Congress must ban the chemical abortion pill – it’s the only solution, Hawley says

After the U.S. Supreme Court lifted the temporary pause on chemical abortion pill mail orders, the drug, mifepristone, has returned to unregulated nationwide shipment.

Now, Congress must “ban it,” Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Missouri, told The Lion.

“Congress needs to ban it, and only Congress can ban it,” Hawley said in an exclusive interview Thursday. “So, we should just say no more mifepristone for use in abortions. It was a mistake ever to have approved it. We should ban it now, and Congress needs to do that ASAP.”

While the Food and Drug Administration initially approved mifepristone in 2000, various administrations, including those under Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, have stripped the abortion pill of regulations and safety restrictions. Currently, ordering mifepristone requires no in-person doctor consultation or follow-up appointment, and is “basically unregulated,” Hawley said. More than 10% of women who take it end up in the emergency room within 40 days for life-threatening events, including sepsis and hemorrhaging, as previously reported.

“This is an inherently dangerous drug. It is an inherently unsafe drug, and it is a drug that is inherently prone to abuse,” Hawley said. “To me, if you’re pro-life, you can’t be for mifepristone.”
