Trump shooting suspect charged with attempted assassination

The man accused of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump at Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner has been charged in federal court.

Cole Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was charged Monday with attempted assassination, transporting a firearm across state lines and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, Fox News reported.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew Sharbaugh approved the unsealing of the case against Allen, who appeared wearing a blue prison uniform but did not enter a plea or speak, except to tell the judge he understood the proceedings.

Attempted assassination carries a potential life sentence upon conviction.

A detention hearing is scheduled for Thursday, with a preliminary hearing set for May 11. Allen remains in U.S. custody.
