Caitlyn Jenner admits it was hypocritical to accept ‘Woman of the Year’ award 10 years ago

(The Lion) — Caitlyn Jenner says he was a “hypocrite” for accepting a “Woman of the Year” award a decade ago.

Jenner made the comment during an interview with Tomi Lahren on Tomi Lahren is Fearless while discussing his opposition to males competing in women’s sports.

“It’s not like I want to protect the LGBT community; I want to protect women,” Jenner said. “It’s not right.”

Jenner, who won Olympic decathlon gold in 1976 when he was known as Bruce Jenner and later became transgender, has spoken out against such policies for years, including during the national debate over male transgender swimmer Lia Thomas, a former NCAA Division I national champion.

Jenner said his past actions do not align with that stance.

“So I fought this battle from the Lia Thomas days until today. And I thought, ‘What a hypocrite I am,’” Jenner told the conservative journalist. “Here I am fighting this battle: biological men out of women’s sports. But back when I came out, what did I accept? Glamour’s Woman of the Year award.”

Jenner said his genetics have not changed.

“What a hypocrite! I’m still XY. Biologically, I’m female. But genetically, I’m still XY. There’s nothing I can do about that,” Jenner said. “And I’m fine with it. I’m just glad I can wake up in the morning and just be myself.”

Jenner began identifying as transgender in 2015 and received national attention, including the Glamour award. The decision drew criticism at the time from those who said he is not, and never will be, a woman.

In 2024, Jenner said he returned the award after hearing from families who objected to it.

“While I never competed for one of the dozens of ‘Glamour Magazine Woman of the Year’ awards, awarded to me in 2016, I accepted the award,” Jenner posted on X. “It has become clear, in speaking with many families, men and women, the distraught nature this acceptance of the award still brings them today.”

Jenner said he no longer felt right keeping the honor.

“Upon discussion, thought and reflection, I agree,” he wrote. “It’s important to me that I walk the walk, like I have on so many of the issues (minors not being treated for transitioning, and sports – no men in women’s sports). I can no longer in good faith hold onto this award.”

Jenner also criticized how activists and political leaders have handled the issue.

“When I came out in 2015, I brought this issue forward, but I had nothing but good in my heart,” Jenner said. “But unfortunately, the left kind of took my issue.”
