Police are investigating a gunfire-riddled car chase that ended with a rollover crash in a Kansas City suburban neighborhood on Sunday evening before sunset, as the suspect is still at large.
A woman realized she was being followed by a Jeep Grand Cherokee shortly after picking another woman up in Kansas City, Missouri. The driver turned onto Roe Avenue in Overland Park, Kansas in an attempt to get rid of the chaser, but the other vehicle pursued and opened fire.
The suspect shot a “large number of rounds” around 99th and Roe and 91st and Roe, according to police. Residents’ comments on Prairie Village Police Department’s Facebook page allege some shots were fired around 95th and Roe as well.
The chase ended when the victim crashed around Franklin Park and her flipped vehicle caught on fire. The passenger suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and was taken to a nearby hospital.
Doorbell security camera footage from surrounding homes show people walking on the sidewalk and kids playing basketball while the shots rang out. Matt Devereux’s Ring camera shows his college-age son walking in the driveway at first and freezing when the bangs started.
“It’s kind of shocking just because we don’t encounter situations like this at all,” Devereux told KSHB. “Very out of the ordinary, and to the point where our kids were like: is that fireworks going off?”
Overland Park Police and Prairie Village Police are jointly investigating the incident and are still looking for the suspect who was driving a red or maroon 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Kansas license plate 9103ACY.
They encourage anyone with information about the car or evidence such as shell casings or camera footage to contact police or use the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
“The Overland Park Police Department thanks our community members who have already provided valuable video footage of the incident. Thank you also to our federal and local partners for their rapid response to this incident.”
