Gov. Kehoe’s plan to phase out Missouri income taxes moves to the Senate

The Missouri House passed a constitutional amendment Thursday aiming to completely phase out the individual state income tax.

House Joint Resolutions 173 and 174 are now heading to the Senate after securing a third reading and passing in committee

Speaker Jon Patterson and Rep. Bishop Davidson sponsored the legislation, which asks voters if they want to modernize the tax code while drastically cutting local tax rates.

It would also protect local funding for public schools.

“Missouri’s tax code was built for the past 100 years. Our economy demands one for the next 100 years. It’s time to phase-out and eliminate Missouri’s individual income tax,” Governor Mike Kehoe said on social media.

The legislation passed the House with a 98-54 tally. Four Republicans (Christensen, Sharpe, Veit, and Shields) voted against it. State Rep. Marlene Terry was the lone Democrat who voted in favor of it.
