Hours before the State of the Union address Tuesday, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas noted “the homicide rate in major U.S. cities is at a 125-year low” and “homicides plummeted by over 20% last year, marking the largest, fastest drop ever recorded.”
But Lucas, head of the Democrat Mayors Association, seems to claim it’s a total coincidence that the historic drop in violent crime came in President Trump’s first year back in office.
“We expect President Trump to once again try to take credit in his State of the Union,” Lucas said in a DMA press release. “But let’s be clear: This is happening in spite of Trump, not because of him.”
Indeed, Lucas claims in his statement that, “Over the course of Trump’s first year in office, instead of working to reduce crime, Trump and Republicans in Washington have pushed unprecedented cuts to critical government and community-based public safety programs our cities rely on. This Administration has recklessly attacked our cities, undermining them at every turn, and lied about public safety to push a political agenda. We’ve seen communities thrown into chaos, families torn apart, and lives lost.”
Instead, Lucas credits Democrats, who’ve controlled most big cities for decades, with the sudden drop in crime in Trump’s first year of his second term.
“The progress we have seen reflects focused, local leadership,” Lucas claims. “Cities led by Democratic mayors, not this president, have made historic investments in public safety – funding law enforcement, investing in prevention, and building modern-safety infrastructures.”
Critics might wonder: If Democrats could’ve done that all along, why didn’t they before Trump’s re-election and his anti-crime and deportation efforts?
Whatever it was, the Council on Criminal Justice last month reported:
“When nationwide data for jurisdictions of all sizes is reported by the FBI later this year, there is a strong possibility that homicides in 2025 will drop to about 4.0 per 100,000 residents. That would be the lowest rate ever recorded in law enforcement or public health data going back to 1900, and would mark the largest single-year percentage drop in the homicide rate on record.”
“Under President Donald J. Trump’s leadership,” the White House argues, “America is safer than it has been in over a century. …
“In addition to the historic drop in murders last year, the nation experienced steep declines in rapes, robberies, aggravated assaults, shooting deaths (fewest since 2015), on-duty law enforcement officer deaths (80-year low), traffic fatalities, and overdose deaths. …
“Since taking office, President Trump has deployed a whole-of-government offensive in Democrat-run cities, driving down crime, ridding the streets of savage criminal illegal aliens, backing law enforcement, and bringing back order where incompetent Democrat politicians surrendered to anarchy and despair.
“President Trump’s proven America First agenda is delivering real results for American citizens, proving once and for all that strength and resolve win out over weakness and wokeness — and the results are only just beginning.”
