Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt is bluntly calling out Democrats for having reached a level of “absurdity” while engaging in a “war with common sense.”
In recent social media posts and in interviews on Fox News Tuesday and Fox Business last week, Schmitt blasted Democrat views on voter ID and ICE.
“The Left operates on a profound moral inversion where criminals are victims & victims are criminals,” Schmitt wrote in an X post. “They can continue to side with criminal illegal aliens. I’m going to side with Americans.”
Democrats argue the SAVE America Act, which would require voters to prove their citizenship through photo ID, would endanger voting rights. “The Save Act is nothing more than Jim Crow 2.0,” New York Democrat Sen. Chuck Schumer claimed in a video shown during the interview with Schmitt on Fox News.
“This is just an outrageous piece of legislation, it’s turning the clock back 100 years,” Schumer added.
However, Schmitt argues Americans would be hurt, by illegals voting, if the law isn’t enacted.
“They’re the ones being disenfranchised by the scheme, and so I think it’s very important for us to take this issue seriously and move forward with the SAVE America Act,” Schmitt said in the interview.
Even though Schumer publicly disagrees with voter ID currently, Fox News provided a clip in which he held a contrasting view:
“Let’s admit the truth. Everywhere people go they’re asked for a Social Security card; in fact, one way to prove you’re a bona fide person who can have a job is to ask for a driver’s license and a Social Security card,” Schumer said in 1996 in support of using photo ID to prevent welfare fraud.
Schmitt says Schumer’s “journey” on voter ID is “indicative of the Democrat Party, which once was a mainstream political party, and now has reached a level of absurdity.”
The majority of Americans agree with the necessity of voter ID, regardless of what political parties argue. “Showing basic ID to vote is a very reasonable idea, and I think 84% of Americans in the last polling from Pew supports that,” Democrat Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman says.
“They’ve lost the argument with the American people,” Schmitt says of Democrats. “Their only game left now is to open the border to 15 or 20 million people and hope that they can somehow allow people to vote who shouldn’t vote.”
While Democrats want to get rid of ICE, Republicans want to get rid of sanctuary cities — a policy that generally limits how much information state and local officials will share with federal immigration officers, Schmitt noted in the interview with Fox Business.
Schmitt also continues advocating for the Protect America Act, legislation he proposed earlier this month that ends sanctuary cities, increases punishment for anyone entering the U.S. illegally and protects law enforcement.
In the interview, Schmitt painted a picture to describe sanctuary cities: if a rapist who’s an illegal alien gets out of prison and goes to a sanctuary city, the city most likely won’t let ICE know. Sanctuary cities would prefer to have criminals on the street to rape and kill Americans rather than have them deported, he said.
“They’re willing to sacrifice the sons and daughters of this country for this sickness, this suicidal empathy that has captured the left and the Democrat Party,” Schumer said. “We’re on the right side here, but we have to keep fighting back.”
