First Lady Melania Trump visits children with rare diseases to celebrate Valentine’s Day, honor their ‘profound resilience’

(The Lion) — First Lady Melania Trump visited children with rare and serious diseases to celebrate Valentine’s Day, encouraging them to stay strong and well.

Trump visited The Children’s Inn at the National Institutes of Health Wednesday to make Valentine-themed crafts with families who are currently or have previously participated in clinical research trials. The inn describes itself as a “place like home” for children and young adults with “rare and serious diseases whose best hope for a diagnosis or treatment” is through a research study at NIH. The inn serves more than 1,500 families at no cost.

Trump, wearing a beige wool shirt dress, red leather belt, and beige snake heels, was greeted with a floral bouquet of white roses by an 11-year-old patient, Lina. Moving through the room, Trump asked various children about their wellbeing, how long they had been at the inn, and about their interests. The youth appeared comfortable and relaxed as they chatted and laughed with Trump, who made a point of telling them she would be thinking of them.

The Lion witnessed Trump pause to ask patients about their music preferences, check in with one young man about whether he’d watched the Super Bowl, and discuss future college plans with another patient as they crafted together.

Trump previously visited the Children’s Inn for Valentine’s Day celebrations in 2018, 2019, and 2020, during the first Trump administration.

“Love reveals itself in many forms, especially in the hardest moments of care and compassion,” Trump said. “Returning to The Children’s Inn at NIH is a special reminder of warmth that exists here year-round thanks to the profound resilience of these young people and the dedication of those working to provide comfort, hope, and support during clinical trials. I wish them all a very happy Valentine’s Day.”

Trump and the youth attendees filled heart-themed boxes with pink candies and cupcakes, before gathering to sign a Valentine’s Day poster.

“We were deeply honored to welcome First Lady Melania Trump back to The Children’s Inn,” said Inn CEO Jennie Lucca in a statement. “Her visit brought joy and comfort to our children and families at a time when compassion and encouragement mean so much. This Valentine’s Day celebration served as a heartfelt reminder that our families are surrounded by care, support, and hope throughout their medical journey.”
