Kansas Democrat claims not to know whether she’s a ‘girl’ in widely seen video

A Democrat candidate for the Kansas House claims not to know whether she is female, in a stunning moment that’s gone viral.

Kristen Schultz, a Democrat candidate running to represent Kansas House District 43 in Johnson County, was videoed at an LGBTQ event at the Johnson County Public Library on Feb. 3.

In an impromptu debate between Schultz and the videographer over boys in girls’ spaces, she was asked, “Are you a girl?”

“I don’t know,” she responded several times, looking oddly perplexed. “Am I?”

The Heartlander reached out to Schultz for comment.

The man asking the questions, Dr. Justin Spiehs, attended the pride event with signs protesting transgenderism, abortion and feminism, standing alongside others in the room supporting the LGBTQ cause.

He challenged Schultz, who had been addressing the crowd, with questions specifically regarding a male student using the female restrooms and locker rooms in Gardner Edgerton school district

“They don’t know all the details because it involves confidentiality,” she responded. “When there are children involved there are details that you cannot provide as a school district.”

When asked about her stance on boys in girls’ locker rooms as a general concept, Schultz said “I’m telling you, I cannot answer that.”

Schultz was elected to the Gardner Edgerton school board for two terms but resigned in 2022, according to AP News. Schultz’s campaign notably focuses on her school board experience and passion for children.

During the meeting, in which Spiehs held a sign, “Why R U Grooming Kids?”, a second video shows a girl nearby who appears to be elementary-school age clutching transgender and LGBTQ+ flags.

In her discussion with Spiehs, Schultz seemed to indicate a school district is powerless to deal with transgender students.

“If you have a student who’s new to the district and is a trans male or female, I don’t know, I don’t care, and presents as a male or female, how is the school district supposed to monitor that?” Schultz argued. “At what point – how do we decide, and who decides?”

Yet, current Gardner Edgerton guidelines state transgender students must use their legal name and sex assigned at birth in school records, regardless of their identity. Transgender children must use the bathroom that corresponds with their biological sex or the unisex bathrooms, not the bathroom for the opposite sex.

“You know what I’m more scared of in bathrooms? People like you,” Schultz said to Spiehs – who noted that, as a man, he indeed doesn’t belong in a female bathroom.
