Stunning reports of billions in brazen welfare fraud by Somali immigrants in Minnesota and elsewhere have shined a harsh light on the double folly of open borders and closed-minded media.
As the legacy media collectively looked away, it took 23-year-old citizen journalist Nick Shirley to make the alleged stealing of $9 billion or more in Medicaid funds an urgent matter.
Among other shocking outrages, Shirley exposed numerous Somali-run “daycares” receiving millions in government subsidies each – while failing to produce signs of even one child on the premises. One of them – the Quality Learning Center in South Minneapolis – had a sign that misspelled itself as a “learing” center.
As many on X noted while the story blew up there over the weekend, unless you’re on the social media platform you may not know about it, or at least the magnitude of it.
One X poster with 250,000 followers kept track of legacy media stories on the scandal:

So telling…
“Where was the Minneapolis Star Tribune on the Somali mass fraud scandal?” independent journalist Megyn Kelly added on X. “Too busy supporting Tim Walz’s radical trans agenda to bother doing what a 23-year-old took the time to do & break the biggest fraud story in the country?”
Of young Shirley’s video story on X – which had earned a staggering 113 million views and counting by Monday morning – Vice President J.D. Vance posted, “This dude has done far more useful journalism than any of the winners of the 2024 @pulitzercenter prizes.”
“Nick Shirley is doing what “60 Mins” used to do—real reporting,” Fox News personality Laura Ingraham posted.
“Hi @60Minutes,” posted @DanielTurnerPTF. “ I’m sure you are prepping a riveting segment on the plight of transgender Guatemalan tuba players but this kid in a hoodie with an iPhone is doing your job…”
“Right now the mainstream media is doing nothing to cover the Somali fraud in Minnesota,” writes #WalkAway activist Brandon Straka writes, “but I guarantee you they’re working overtime to dig through @nickshirleyy’s past to try to find something to discredit him.”

What Shirley uncovered “is staggering,” writes popular podcaster Benny Johnson:
– Quality Learning Center (misspelled sign): Licensed for 99 kids. $1.9M in 2025, $4M total. Appeared abandoned.
– Future Leaders Early Learning Center: Licensed for 90 kids. $6.67M over two years. Completely empty.
– Mako + Mini Child Care: Licensed for 120 kids combined. $4.6M over three years.
– ABC Learning Center: Licensed for 40 kids. $3M over three years. Inactive.
– Centers trace back to the same people, pointing to a coordinated operation of fake services.
– Staff refused questions and couldn’t explain where the kids were.
– One building alone had 22 healthcare or autism service entities registered
– One day. Over $110M in taxpayer payments tied to the locations he visited.
“All it took was one man and a camera to expose what the state either ignored or allowed. If officials weren’t complicit, this would have been stopped long ago.”
Where are the children?
Shirley interviewed one sleuth who said he’d visited 40 to 50 Somali daycares in the Twin Cities and found no children whatsoever – while getting pushed and followed down the street and having doors shut in his face.
Moreover, the pair noted Somali-run medical transportation companies receiving significant government subsidies but appearing to transport no patients.
A tsunami of outrage is convulsing X while the legacy media watch from a distance.
“If fake autistic Somali children ‘learing’ centers in Minnesota that collected piles of American taxpayer money to line the pockets of Democrat politicians and fund the terrorist group Al-Shabaab doesn’t radicalize you then I honestly don’t know what will,” one poster wrote.
Meanwhile, India born and Ohio-raised attorney Mehek Cooke alleges skyrocketing home health care fraud there – in which people merely claim to be caring for relatives and receive subsidies of up to $90,000 per relative.
Healthcare providers, she says, are blowing the whistle on unscrupulous peers who are rubberstamping the fraudulent subsidy requests and receiving kickbacks.
“We really need to investigate the Medicaid system and how much it’s increased since the Somalian population came,” she says in an interview, “and who really needs critical care, because that’s meant for our disabled, our elderly, and people who really need it – not to just live off our system. And that’s what’s happening in Ohio.”
The Trump administration, notes CBS News, is even “looking into whether Minnesota tax money found its way to al Shabaab, a U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organization and al Qaeda affiliate based in Somalia.”
“Not mad enough”
“Fake daycares with 0 kids,” writes Libs of TikTok.
“Fake healthcare companies with no healthcare
“Fake transportation companies which transported 0 passengers
“Fake food pantries which delivered 0 food
“All funded by our tax dollars and funneled to Democrat candidates and islamic t*rrorists
“YOU ARE NOT MAD ENOUGH.”
Indeed, others have wryly observed that the massive immigrant grift comes on the heels of the Democrats’ moves in 2021 and 2022 to monitor Americans’ transactions down to $600 and to hire 87,000 new IRS agents to make sure of it.
Certainly the exploding fury over arguably the largest swindle in world history has rightly turned to the reckless, rampant open-border immigration under Joe Biden.
“Imagine if we could take back all the money the invaders have pillaged,” posted Fox personality Tomi Lahren. “Could we solve veteran homelessness? All homelessness? Feed hungry American children and seniors? Provide better education to inner city communities? Upgrade air traffic infrastructure?
“The possibilities are endless when you take care of YOUR people first.
“But democrats would rather import pirates so they can turn them into voters and win elections.
“S I C K.”
“Millions who don’t share our values”
Adds Fox commentator Kaylee McGhee White: “It turns out that importing millions of people – illegally AND legally – who don’t share our values and customs will only ever guarantee one thing: the breakdown of the social compact and the high trust society it’s given us.
“Enough. They all need to go.”
Perhaps the most compelling takedown of Biden’s immigration idiocy is made by a well-traveled X poster who fancies himself as “Cynical Publius.”
“I’m not sure that most Americans understand that in large swathes of humanity, there is no actual concept of ‘fraud,’ particularly fraud against the government,” he writes. “Instead, there is a belief in the virtue of getting away with what you can to help yourself and your tribe.”
In international work as a military officer, he writes, “I can’t really count the sheer number of times I was offered bribes to award a contract, or falsify records to do things like create larger (fake) headcounts at places like dining facilities, or to just simply be on the take for future illegal requests. …
“The weird thing about this to me was that whenever I turned down such an offering, it was treated as a grave insult. I was the one in the wrong, and not the fraudster trying to bribe me. They considered it rude that I was in their country and refused to accept how things got done. …
“Fraud is not even a concept”
“Let me repeat: in these cultures, FRAUD IS NOT EVEN A CONCEPT. There is only what helps your tribe. ..
“So when we import people en masse from cultures that accept bribery and fraud as routine, acceptable ways to advance one’s tribe, we should not be surprised that things like the $8 BILLION fraud schemes of the Somali population in Minnesota happen so easily.
“Introducing a fraud-based culture based on tribalism into America is like introducing some sort of lethal virus into a population that has no natural immunity. The virus will spread and grow, unchecked, because it is so alien to the host. Similarly, a culture of fraud is anathema to American thinking, and it must be cut out before it consumes the host.”
The problem, however, is not totally foreign to us. There’s also the little matter of Minnesota officials – most notably Gov. Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison – ignoring repeated signs and warnings about the grand larceny under their noses.
They’ve presided over a historic theft from every taxpayer in America.
“Blatant outright fraud discoverable in minutes,” billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman writes, noting how easily Shirley unearthed it all. “This is not incompetence. This could not have occurred without Minnesota politicians and government officials willful blindness. How could
@Tim_Walz have allowed this to occur?
“Heads must roll.”
First, of course, eyes – particularly in the media – must turn to the mammoth scandal.
