Independent journalist harassed, pepper-sprayed at protest ‘against Islamification’ in Dearborn, Michigan

(The Lion) — Independent journalist Cam Higby was harassed and assaulted by counter-protestors during Tuesday’s “Americans Against Islamification” rally in Dearborn, Michigan, according to videos posted online and testimony he gave at a City Hall meeting.

The event drew hundreds of marchers opposing the growth and influence of Islam in the West, and saw tensions rise between local activists, counter-protesters and community members. Dearborn is the first Arab-majority city in the country, the BBC reported last year.

In one of many videos posted online, an individual dressed in black – alleged by Higby to be associated with ANTIFA – threatens and then maces Higby directly in the face.

Following the incident, Higby approached Dearborn police officers nearby. In footage he posted, Higby tells an officer he had just been assaulted and asks authorities to intervene. The officer responds that he “couldn’t leave his post,” according to Higby’s recording.

Later that evening, Higby gave public comments at the Dearborn City Hall meeting, where he described the harassment he endured that day and the night before, which he said included being surveilled by a drone, being followed by persons or vehicles, being maced, having $50 stolen from his pocket and having his phone smashed. This, despite wearing a media badge, he said.

Higby also claimed that several men inside City Hall made verbal threats toward him.

“Yesterday Muslim protestors threatened to kill me EVERY TIME I walked by INSIDE OF DEARBORN CITY HALL,” Higby wrote on X. “I’d go to the bathroom and as I walked past they’d say ‘I’m going to Charlie Kirk you boy.’ I told the police. They did nothing.”

report from Fox 2 in Detroit put it differently, saying alt-right groups “rallied to condemn Islam only to be overwhelmed by a large group of Muslim activists determined to promote peace.”

Dearborn Police have not yet released a statement addressing the alleged assault reported by Higby.
