‘They’ll do it to anybody’: Biden spy scandal ‘a terrible chapter,’ conservatives right to demand charges, Hawley says

Biden administration spying on GOP senators is part of “a terrible chapter in American history,” and conservatives are right to worry there’ll be no accountability for it, Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley argues.

“Here’s what really angers me,” he said in an exclusive interview with The Heartlander Thursday. “If they’re willing to do it to me, and they were – I mean, they tapped my phone, they tapped the phone of seven other sitting United States senators – they’ll do it to anybody. And they’ve done that, too.

“Think about what Joe Biden and his goons were doing in 2022 and 2023. They were going after parents at school board meetings. They were going after Catholics and other Christians in their churches – in their churches! – trying to recruit spies into churches. They were going after pro-lifers, sending FBI SWAT teams to their doors in a blatant attempt to intimidate them.

“They were going after people online, including Missouri parents who had their posts censored, Facebook accounts canceled, at the behest of the White House. This was the most out-of-control, corrupt administration, I believe, in American history. I cannot think of a parallel when it comes to the abuse of law enforcement in our history with what Joe Biden did.

“And so, my view is, what they did to me in tapping my phone is blatantly unconstitutional, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. You look at what they did to Americans all across this country. It is revolting. It is wrong.

“People need to be held accountable for it. There needs to be prosecutions for those who broke the law. And we need to ensure this never happens again.”

Was Biden special counsel Jack Smith’s “Arctic Frost” probe really about the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol protest – or was it only a pretext for snooping on the political opposition?

“Oh, I think it’s a total pretext,” Hawley says. “Listen, a Jan. 6th investigation that is happening in 2023?

“You’ve got this special counsel, and again, his goons – and I’m sorry, there’s just no other word for these people, operating totally outside the bounds of the law. And they decide, ‘Well, let’s go wiretap a bunch of Republican conservative senators. Let’s go after 92 conservative organizations, including Charlie Kirk,’ who have nothing to do with Jan. 6th, one way or another. Nothing at all.

“Now, this was absolutely a dragnet. It was a witch hunt. It was an attempt to try and destroy the Republican Party. Why? Because Joe Biden didn’t want to surrender power.

“This is a guy who’s so desperate for power, his idea was, ‘We’ll just prosecute out of existence my opposition. And so if these senators are a problem, we’ll spy on them. If these organizations are a problem, we’ll investigate them. If Donald Trump is a problem, we’ll prosecute him.’

“That was their attitude. Thank goodness they failed. But the way to stop this happening in the future is to prosecute people who tried to do it.”

Conservatives on X are enraged about it, but they’re just as convinced that Republicans won’t do anything tangible about it except hold hearings and complain to a hostile media.

“Get ready for ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to be done about this,” one skeptical poster wrote, echoing many.

Are they wrong?

“You know, I have the same concern,” Hawley says, “and this is exactly what I said to the attorney general two days ago. I said, listen, it’s not enough to just say, ‘Oh, well, thank goodness that we found out that they’ve been tapping phones – that solves it.’ It does not solve it.

“No one has yet been held accountable. We need to have a special prosecutor, I believe, whose sole task is to go after the facts, get all of the facts, expose all of it, and then prosecute people. That’s how you put a stop to this. You restore the rule of law.

“There needs to be full transparency and full accountability. And until we get that, I believe we’re in danger of the same thing happening again. And we can never allow this to happen again.

“This has been a terrible chapter in American history for everybody who’s had to live through it. And so many Americans, their liberties have been abused by this last administration. You stop that by holding people accountable who did it.”
