(The Lion) — The host of HBO’s “Real Time” is bringing attention to the shockingly neglected development of Christian genocide in Nigeria – a story the Lion has been covering all year.
The comments from comedian and host Bill Maher came on Friday during a panel discussion with Rep. Nancy Mace, R-South Carolina, who is also currently vying for the GOP nomination for governor in her state.
“I mean, the fact that this issue has not gotten on people’s radar, right? It’s pretty amazing,” Maher said on the Friday night show about the attacks.
He accused anyone not paying attention to the mass slaughter of Christians in Nigeria of living in a “bubble,” noting “your media sources suck.”
He then expanded, calling out liberals and young people for ignoring the issue.
“I’m not a Christian, but they are systematically killing the Christians in Nigeria. They’ve killed over 100,000 since 2009, they’ve burned 18,000 churches,” Maher said.
His comments came on the heels of multiple reports from InterSociety, a watchdog group, which expressed alarm over the growing number of casualties among Christians in the country.
An August report by the group alleges Nigeria has become the headquarters for 22 Islamic terror groups operating across Africa.
“Jihadists Killed 185,009 Defenseless Nigerians Since 2009 (16 Years) Including 125,000 Christians And 60,000 Liberal Muslims – During Which 19,100 Churches Were Razed,” read the report’s slug.
This year the group estimates 7,000 Christians have been killed so far.
The 54-page document warns these groups aim to “obliterate” Christianity and indigenous cultural heritage while imposing a sultanate in Nigeria.
The terror groups are increasingly spreading their networks across the country from their northern origins, making Nigeria a central hub for recruitment, logistics and coordination of attacks in the region beyond Nigeria.
The watchdog charged federal and state authorities in the country have failed to quell the threats.
The group also called on Western governments, including United States, to impose sanctions on Islamic clerics who support these terror groups.
Maher, who is famous for being a skeptic of religion and once spoke with Charlie Kirk about Christianity, was appalled by the genocidal killings.
“This is so much more. These are the Islamist Boko Haram,” added Maher in his comments to Mace. “This is so much more of a genocide attempt than what is going on in Gaza. They are literally attempting to wipe out the Christian population of an entire country. Where are the kids protesting this?”
Maher attributed the lack of outrage to the absence of “Jews” as the liberal bogeyman in the debate about Nigeria.
“Well, because the Jews aren’t involved. That’s why,” Maher responded, reported Fox News. “It’s the Christians and the Muslims – who cares?”
Meanwhile, the topic of genocide in Nigeria began trending on social media, thanks in part to the talk host’s use of the bully pulpit.
X’s AI, Grok, estimated Monday there were more than 14,000 X posts related to Maher and Nigeria.
“Nigeria’s Christians are facing brutal attacks. I am outraged by the silence of the media and the world as so many innocent are being massacred,” said New York Mayor Eric Adams on X.
In July, Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley told The Lion something had to be done in Nigeria and beyond. “It is open season on Christians in a way that we haven’t seen in our lifetimes,” he said.
Hawley teamed up with U.S. Rep. Riley Moore, R-West Virginia, to sponsor a proposed resolution condemning the persecution of Christians.
In addition to Christian persecution in Nigeria, The Lion has reported on a number of attacks this year against Christians in Congo.
