Beloved Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid was in his stadium office when a bullet pierced his window early in May 2024, fans learned quite belatedly Wednesday.
The 67-year-old three-time Super Bowl winner known for his championship work ethic was actually working after midnight May 4, 2024 when the bullet is said to have whizzed past and lodged in the wall between his office door and private bathroom, a mere 15 feet from his desk, The Kansas City Star wrote in an exclusive story.
Nor was it a stray bullet: Two others were fired at an office above Reid’s and into an air-conditioning unit outside.
No arrests have been made – nor was anything said about the incident until now.
“There is no indication this was a targeted incident at any person or organization,” The Star quoted Kansas City Police Department spokesperson Capt. Jacob Becchina.
The incident is considered an aggravated assault because the building was occupied at the time of the shooting, Becchina said.
The odd silence for so long surrounding the frightening incident is all the more bizarre given what The Start calls the Chiefs’ “world-wide profile, with their games and star players increasing their international footprint.”
Indeed, the Chiefs are the subject of a six-part documentary series on ESPN called The Kingdom, which highlights the inside and back stories of the team’s 2024 quest for a third-straight Super Bowl victory, which ended up eluding their grasp.
Moreover, the Chiefs will travel to Sao Paulo, Brazil to kick off the season against the division rival Los Angeles Chargers Sept. 5.
Reid’s office, The Star’s Sam McDowell writes, “sits on the second floor of the three-story practice facility, overlooking the team’s three practice fields to the north side. The facility resides inside the Truman Sports Complex, a stone’s throw from GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.”
The startling report comes as both the Chiefs and their Truman Sports Complex neighbors the Kansas City Royals, are considering relocating to Kansas or, in the case of the Royals, to Kansas, downtown Kansas City or Clay County, Missouri.
Though Reid is renowned for his industriousness, the fact that he would be in his office after midnight deep into the offseason still had fans shaking their heads in admiration.
