An alleged illegal immigrant has now been charged with sexually assaulting two young girls in Missouri’s Smithville Lake July 4th.
The man, identified as Carlos Climaco-Garcia, 26, reportedly approached two 13-year-old girls at Little Platte Swim Beach, asking for their phone numbers and inviting them to go back to Mexico with him. When he was rebuffed, he allegedly groped them and attempted to pull their swimsuit bottoms down.
They managed to get away from the man and alert nearby adults, after which deputies detained the suspect coming out of the water, reports say.
“We put a lot of extra deputies at Smithville Lake over the Independence Day weekend, which led to them immediately being able to catch a man who has now been charged with child molestation,” the Clay County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post after the holiday weekend.
A Clay County grand jury has now indicted Climaco-Garcia on two counts of third-degree child molestation. The charges are considered Class B felonies, with each one carrying a sentence of 5 to 15 years in prison, according to the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office.
The Heartlander has been told the man also has an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer on him.
