(The Lion) — Heartbeat International’s Abortion Pill Rescue Network (APRN) has recorded over 7,000 lives saved since 2012 – a milestone the organization celebrates for women who regret beginning a chemical abortion.
The network connects women who have taken mifepristone – the first of two pills used in a chemical abortion – with medical professionals prepared to administer a reversal protocol. If taken quickly enough, this procedure can often counteract the drug’s effects and allow the pregnancy to continue, the group explains.
“This is a milestone of hope,” APRN’s executive director Christa Brown said in a release. “Statistics show more than 7,000 lives have been saved – each one representing a woman who found the courage to reverse course and continue her pregnancy, often in the face of fear, isolation and pressure.”
The announcement comes as the abortion pill faces growing scrutiny.
An April report from the Ethics & Public Policy Center warned of serious safety concerns with mifepristone, citing data from adverse events and complications.
“Chemical abortion drugs are being marketed as simple and safe, but the reality is far more dangerous,” Jor-El Godsey, president of Heartbeat International, said in the release. “Women deserve the truth – and they deserve to know that there is a way to reverse the effects of mifepristone and save their child’s life if they act quickly.”
The number of calls to the organization’s 24/7 Abortion Pill Rescue hotline has steadily increased every month since November 2024, a sign it says points to growing demand and awareness of the reversal option.
While the APRN continues to expand, its work hasn’t gone unchallenged.
Heartbeat International cites a number of legal threats from pro-abortion politicians, social media advertising bans and suppression on platforms such as Google and Yelp. Even so, the group says many women still find the hotline through local pregnancy centers, referrals and word of mouth.
“We give all glory to God for this milestone,” Brown said. “And we’re grateful for our network of courageous healthcare providers and the pregnancy help organizations who offer women compassion and clarity when they need it most.”
Chemical abortions now account for most abortions in the United States, a change exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic.
Heartbeat International describes the APRN as the most effective existing response to help women who change their minds after taking the first pill.
