(The Lion) — The mother of Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes doesn’t think male transgender athletes belong in women’s sports.
“As a female, I think that it’s not a fair matchup,” Randi Mahomes said in a recent podcast episode with “MOMetize Your Passion” host Tirralan Watkin.
“Personally, from being a woman and a girl and doing co-ed teams throughout my life and just having fun in sports, there is a huge difference between male and female,” she said. “I love everyone, but when it comes to physical strength and just our DNA, I don’t think it’s fair because I do have a daughter, and I do have a son. As you develop, there is a difference.”
Mahomes’ mom has three children, including a teenage daughter.
She is taking an increasingly popular position. A January New York Times poll found 79% of Americans oppose males competing in women’s sports, while 18% support it.
Similarly, an April 2025 NBC News poll found 75% of Americans oppose the practice, while only 25% support it. The poll also revealed broad opposition across age groups and both sexes.
Currently, over 30 states have policies preventing males from competing in women’s sports. President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to withhold funding from states that allow it.
In response, high school athletic bodies in Virginia, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Nebraska announced they would no longer allow males to compete against girls; Georgia also enacted a law outlawing it this year.
Additionally, the NCAA has barred biological males from women’s competitions.
Males won at least nine girls’ state championships during the 2024-25 school year, including at least six transgender athletes, The Lion previously reported. Those titles came in field hockey, gymnastics, track and softball.
Even as most Americans voice their opposition, many Democratic politicians refuse to outlaw the practice.
When a measure barring males from interscholastic women’s sports came before the U.S. Senate earlier this year, every Republican voted for it while no Democrats backed it.
Schools and athletic governing bodies should make such decisions rather than the federal government, several Democrats argued.
Oddly, former President Joe Biden reportedly opposed males competing in women’s sports even as his administration tried to force schools to allow it.
