Over 100 abortion clinics closed since overturn of Roe v. Wade

(The Lion) — Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022 in its Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision, abortion clinics have been shutting down nationwide.

At least 105 clinics have shut down in the three years since, including 65 in states that haven’t enacted new abortion limits, the Associated Press reports.

“I honestly don’t know if it’s a sustainable model,” Mercedes Sanchez, executive director at the Cedar River Clinics, a Washington abortion clinic, told the Associated Press. “Clinics, providers, funds are all very committed to making sure people can access care, but it is definitely going to be more of a challenge.”

One reason for the closures involves the rise of chemical abortions, the report says. Abortions before 10 weeks are often administered via telehealth, making traditional abortion clinics less relevant.

However, Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, blames Planned Parenthood’s mismanagement for contributing to the decline.

“After years of financial mismanagement, botched procedures, abuse of their employees, Medicaid fraud, prioritizing politics over patients, and focusing like maniacs on committing more abortions instead of providing actual healthcare, Planned Parenthood is finally having to face the consequences of its own actions,” she writes. “And that means it is unable to balance its own budgets and keep its own facilities open.”

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA Pro-Life America, expresses a similar sentiment.

“Planned Parenthood’s focus is squarely on abortions, gender transitions and political spending,” she told the Associated Press.

The closures include at least 20 Planned Parenthood clinics in 2025, up from four in 2024.

President Donald Trump’s administration has helped accelerate these closures. Notably, the Trump administration froze Title X family planning funding for nine Planned Parenthood clinics in March, including two in Utah that have since closed. Title X funding provided these clinics with 20% of their annual budgets.

“The ways in which this administration is dismantling access to public health and public health information are really troubling and, frankly, force us to make these difficult decisions very quickly,” Shireen Ghorbani, interim president of Planned Parenthood Association of Utah, said in a statement.

Currently, 12 states have banned abortion. Another four ban it after six weeks when the baby’s heartbeat can be detected.
