Missouri lawmakers ask state’s U.S. senators to pass Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill with urgency

Republicans in the Missouri House and Senate sent separate but identical letters Wednesday to the state’s two U.S. senators exhorting them to pass President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill with urgency.

Twin letters from the state’s GOP caucus in each chamber, obtained by The Heartlander, were signed by 50 House members and 14 senators.

The letters read:

“We, the undersigned … write to express our strong and united support for President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill and to thank you for your leadership in standing up for Missouri values in the United States Senate.

“This legislation represents exactly what Missourians are demanding: secure borders, energy independence, a strong economy, protection of parental rights, and a federal government that gets out of the way of everyday Americans.

“These are not abstract policy goals — they are the daily priorities of working families in our districts.

“As you lead the charge in Washington, know this: you have our full backing. We will proudly stand with you and with President Trump in promoting and defending this bill in our communities and across the state as partners in the fight to move this nation forward.

“We will not be silenced by the radical left, the media, or the DC establishment. Missouri is behind you, and together, we will ensure the America First agenda is not only heard but Enacted.”

Sen. Eric Schmitt says he’s certainly full speed ahead.

“There is a united front across Missouri and the nation to get President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill across the finish line,” Schmitt says in a statement to The Heartlander, “and in the U.S. Senate, we’re looking at ways to make it the best possible bill. I look forward to delivering on President Trump’s agenda to bring key solutions to the issues facing hardworking Missouri families.”

The letters come as the White House is cautioning senators not to make so many changes in the House-passed version that the bill ping-pongs between the two chambers. Trump has made it clear he’d like the bill on his desk by July 4th.

That may be easier said than done without the kind of support the Missouri legislators are seeking. As Politico notes:

“Some GOP senators are openly questioning whether they can wrap their version of the tax and spending package by that date, let alone pass the whole thing.

“If the Senate is able to adhere to its own timeline, it’ll come down to whether Speaker Mike Johnson can get his members to swallow the Senate’s changes – and there’s no guarantee how quickly that will happen.”

Politico reports several senators are keen on increasing key business tax deductions, but some House members may withdraw their support for that, absent spending cuts to offset the deductions.

The news outlet suggests senators may therefore be tempted to “water down” the no tax on tips and overtime provisions in the bill, which Trump campaigned on.

“But the White House is making clear behind the scenes that would be a no-go,” says Politico.
