(The Lion) — The leader of the Satanic Grotto won’t face charges following his March 28 arrest for punching a man twice inside the Kansas Capitol.
As reported previously by The Lion, the incident occurred when the group’s founder and president, Michael Stewart, attempted to lead a Black Mass originally to be held outside to satisfy the group’s permit.
Instead, he tried to perform the ritual inside the Capitol and faced immediate backlash from protesters.
When one protester swiped at his hands in an apparent attempt to disrupt the ritual, Stewart is seen on video punching the protester twice before Capitol police swoop in and take him away in handcuffs.
After a May 28 hearing, Shawnee County prosecutors decided to no longer pursue charges against Stewart and two other group members arrested during the incident, Stewart told the Kansas Reflector.
A call to the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office wasn’t immediately returned, the Reflector reports. While there is no indication the office may change course on pressing charges, there is a five-year statute of limitations, the report notes.
Stewart is planning a new event, reportedly speaking with Capitol police after the hearing about a “Witches Hour Protest” on the south lawn of the Capitol from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. sometime in early August.
Invitees include Wiccans, pagans and “any kind of witchy inclined hippie we can find,” according to Stewart.
“We’re happy that we’re able to get back at it,” he said, noting members of his group had been “restless” anticipating the case’s outcome.
Capitol police have not mentioned additional measures being considered, if any, to prevent another violent incident should the August event move forward.
