(The Lion) — Studying “questions of trans life,” a transgender journal and hosting new LGBTQ events is on the docket at the University of Kansas thanks to a $1 million grant.
The planned “Trans Studies Initiative” aims to build a “network of interdisciplinary engagement” using “coursework, a lecture series, a fellowship program, community grants, and the publication of TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly,” the initiative’s website says.
“We study questions of trans life, trans theorizing, and trans materiality across epistemological and ontological bounds,” the website adds.
A $1 million grant from the Mellon Foundation funds the program, which will partner with the university’s Center for Sexuality and Gender Diversity to host activities and social events for LGBT-identifying students, The College Fix reports.
Paul Dupont, the communications director for the American Principles Project, told The College Fix the initiative is “just another example of how the left co-opts public institutions to advance their ideological agenda.”
“We’re also seeing it in the federal government, federal agencies,” he added.
Dupont thinks it’s particularly egregious that something like this would happen in a solid red state.
“It’s unfortunate to see this happening in Kansas of all places, but this is something that happens in blue states, red states, everywhere. I mean, this is just what the left does,” he said.
He added that the state Legislature could pass a bill preventing publicly funded institutions from promoting gender ideology. However, Gov. Laura Kelly, a Democrat, would likely veto it.
The Legislature has recently overridden Kelly on legislation barring males from women’s sports and banning so-called gender-affirming care for minors, so an override in this case is possible.
The path for such legislation could get easier if a Republican wins the governor’s seat in 2026, as Kelly can’t seek re-election then due to the state’s term limits.
