(The Lion) — President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance rebuked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as “disrespectful” during a heated confrontation in the Oval Office on Friday.
During the last 10 minutes of the 45-minute meeting, Zelenskyy pushed back on the idea that diplomacy would work, alleging earlier failed attempts, and asked Vance, “What kind of diplomacy, JD, are you asking me about?”
“I’m talking about the kind of diplomacy that’s going to end the destruction of your country,” Vance fired back, with Zelenskyy attempting to interrupt.
“Mr. President, with respect,” Vance continued, “I think it’s disrespectful for you to come to the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media,” adding that Zelenskyy should be thankful for the American support he’s received.
“You’re gambling with the lives of millions of people,” Trump interjected. “You’re gambling with World War III, and what you’re doing is very disrespectful to the country, this country that’s backed you far more than a lot of people say they should have.”
Trump followed up the meeting with a post on Truth Social: “I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for Peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations. I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE. He can come back when he is ready for Peace.”
Trump and Zelenskyy had planned to have lunch and sign a minerals deal, the AP reported, but Zelenskyy left the White House almost immediately.
