(The Lion) — Multiple wildfires enveloping nearly 28,000 acres are rocking the Los Angeles area, displacing more than 70,000 people in some of LA’s toniest neighborhoods.
The fires come just months after insurance companies cancelled homeowner policies while citing the extreme risk of insuring the area, which burns annually.
The tepid state and local response to the fires in the famed Hollywood Hills area west of Los Angeles, which has left at least five dead and thousands of homes destroyed, has dovetailed into the sagging popularity of California’s Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom.
The result has left many wondering whether Newsom has met his “Justin Trudeau” moment, in which the Democrat governor’s political credibility is no longer sustainable.
Trudeau, the longtime progressive golden boy of Canadian politics, resigned his spot as the Liberal Party’s leader this week, as he prepares to also abandon his position as prime minister of Canada with his approval ratings tanking.
In December, Trudeau’s approval rating was just 22%, reported The Lion.
In a review of 30 opinion polls, The Hill reported that as of Dec. 2, Newsom’s favorability rating was similarly in the bottom-fourth quartile, at 27%, even before the wildfire crisis highlighted his failed policies.
Adding to Newsom’s problems is incoming President Donald Trump, who lost no time reminding Newsom that the once-and-future president had warned the governor about the inadequacies of fire prevention measures in the state.
Trump blamed this year’s fires on mismanaged water resources in California that have been diverted to protect an endangered species called the Delta smelt, reported local ABCNews 10.
Newsom denied the allegations, calling Trump’s charges “pure fiction” in a statement to the local ABCNews station. But there is no denying that previously Trump had repeatedly warned Newsom the state needed to better prepare for wildfires.
“There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor,” said Trump in 2018, after touring a massive wildfire site with then governor-elect Newsom. “Billions of dollars are given each year, with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forests. Remedy now, or no more Fed payments!”
In 2019, Trump also raked Newsom over the coals for unpreparedness during the wildfire season.
“Every year, as the [fires] rage & California burns, it is the same thing-and then he comes to the Federal Government for $$$ help,” said Trump via the former Twitter. “No more. Get your act together Governor. You don’t see close to the level of burn in other states.”
Newsom promised to institute reforms in how fires are prevented and managed, but a 2021 report from California Public Radio showed the state imposed prevention measures on fewer and fewer acres of forest, even as the state enjoyed a massive budget surplus.
“Newsom has claimed that 35 ‘priority projects’ carried out as a result of his executive order resulted in fire prevention work on 90,000 acres,” said the report. “But the state’s own data show the actual number is 11,399.”
What’s clear is the problems of wildfire management in the Hollywood Hills are strictly a problem for the state and local authorities to manage. And no matter how they spin it, they’ve failed, critics agree – including even leftist actors.
In addition to the problems with Newsom’s management of wildfire prevention, reports have confirmed fire hydrants ran out of water in Los Angeles as firefighters fought the blazes.
“You’ve got thousands of homes destroyed, families destroyed, businesses destroyed,” said Rick Caruso, a real estate developer, former Los Angeles Department of Water and Power commissioner and former mayoral candidate, according to the Associated Press.
“I think you can figure out a way to get more water in the hydrants. I don’t think there’s room for excuses here.”
In the meantime, the Newsom comparisons to Trudeau are piling up on social media, with calls coming for the California governor to resign.
“Justin Trudeau stepped down as Prime Minister of Canada,” wrote one social media user at X. “Time for Gavin Newsom to do the same as Governor of California. Both incompetent leaders.”
Others said it was Newsom’s insistence on progressive policies that created the fire crisis, such as hiring fire personnel based on diversity, equity and inclusion criteria, not competence, and blaming wildfires on global warming.
“Don’t blame climate change. When you make DEI and ‘free everything’ for illegals your main priority, there isn’t enough money left over to give your fire department what they need to do their job,” wrote another X user. “Californians need to do to Gavin Newsom what Canadians did to Trudeau.”
While Newsom likely won’t resign, the latest fires and his declining popularity could clearly put a dent in his plans to run for president in 2028.
“Newsom is toast. There is no way he can run for president in 2028 after this,” argued another X user. “He is Trudeau 2.0. He should resign.”
