(The Lion) — A private women’s liberal arts college in Massachusetts will offer a course titled “White Supremacy in the Age of Trump” in the spring 2025 semester.
Smith College, located in Northampton, Massachusetts, is offering the course as part of its “Study of Women, Gender & Sexuality” program.
“This course analyzes the history, prevalence, and current manifestations of the white supremacist movement by examining ideological components, tactics, and strategies, and its relationship to mainstream politics,” the course description reads.
“Students research and discuss the relationship between white supremacy and white privilege and explore how to build a human rights movement to counter the white supremacist movement in the U.S.”
Professor Loretta Ross has taught the course since 2019, according to Campus Reform.
Ross is no fan of President-elect Donald Trump or the Republican Party. She has said Trump represents white supremacy and Republicans cheat to win elections.
“They’ve learned that they’re out of step with the rest of the country,” Ross said of the Republican Party in a 2023 interview with Dissent Magazine. “They have to cheat because they can’t compete. And that’s why we’re seeing all this voting rights suppression, not only targeting Black, Latino, and Indigenous voters, but young voters.”
Additionally, Ross has said abortion can be a “joyful” experience.
“Abortion, like childbirth, can be a joyful experience when achieving reproductive justice through human rights,” Ross wrote in a 2017 book review of Happy Abortions: Our Bodies in the Era of Choice.
Smith College offers the anti-Trump course taught by Ross as part of the Five College Consortium, meaning students at five different colleges in the Pioneer Valley region of Massachusetts can take it for credit. These schools include Smith College, Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
