(The Center Square) – Vice President Kamala Harris spoke from the White House South Lawn on Monday where she told event attendees that the president, who has been quarantined with COVID-19, is “feeling much better.”
Harris’ comments are her first publicly since announcing Sunday she will take President Joe Biden’s place on the Democratic presidential ticket.
“Our president Joe Biden wanted to be here today,” Harris said to begin the speech. “He is feeling much better and recovering fast, and he looks forward to getting back on the road.
Harris went on to say Biden’s legacy is “unmatched in modern history.”
“In one term, he has already surpassed the legacy of most presidents who have served two terms in office,” Harris said, despite 40-year-high inflation that occurred during his administration, the ongoing border crisis, the deadly withdrawal of U.S. from Afghanistan and two wars staring (Russia-Ukraine; Israe;-Hamas.)
Harris gave the remarks to a gathering of NCAA champion athletes at the White House.
“To all our athletes, I say congratulations on what you have accomplished and good luck on what is to come,” she said.
Biden’s social media accounts posted a letter on Sunday saying he was withdrawing from the race and endorsing Harris. The news kicked off a major overhaul of the presidential race and marked the climax of weeks of Democrats calling on Biden to leave the ticket after his disastrous debate performance on June 27.
Other key Democrats have begun endorsing Harris as well. Harris saw a spike in fundraising after the announcement.
“It’s the first full day of our campaign, so I’m heading up to Wilmington, DE later to say ‘hello’ to our staff in HQ,” Harris wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, Monday morning. “One day down. 105 to go. Together, we’re going to win this.”
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has continued to blast Biden, saying he should resign and that Harris ‘stole’ the race from Biden.
“Who is running our Country right now?” Trump said in a statement on Sunday. “It’s not Crooked Joe, he has no idea where he is. If he can’t run for office, he can’t run our Country!!!”
