Op-Ed: The Weak in Review: Mayor Q and unacceptable terminology

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas accused Missouri Gov. Mike Parson of using a racial “dog whistle” when referring to the suspected shooters at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade as “thugs.”

I’m sorry, Q, but the urban dictionary says the definition of “thug” is an aggressive and violent young criminal. Synonyms: goon, hood, hoodlum, punk, strong-armer, tough, toughie.

The Oxford Dictionary defines the term as a violent, aggressive person, especially one who is a criminal. He was attacked by a gang of thugs.

Cambridge defines it as a man who acts violently, esp. a criminal.

If you notice, there’s no mention of race, creed, color or religion. I’m sure you’d prefer “young scholars,” but if you’re in a crowded venue, pull a gun and randomly shoot 20-plus people, you’re firmly in the thug lane with your foot on the gas!

Following the shooting, Parson had said, “We can’t let some thugs just take over and ruin what happened.”

Q said, “I have respect for the governor. We get along well. I disagree strongly with how he would describe that situation. I certainly do think this was criminal activity. It was lawlessness, and I think that that’s troubling. But ‘thugs’ is a dog whistle in the most classic sense.”

Here’s a tip, Q. Remember when you were a city councilman, railing against Mayor Sly, demanding he pass laws to stop the KC murder rate? As karma would have it, now you’re in the driver’s seat and the murder rate is skyrocketing.

How do those words you said then taste now?
