SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The popular gas station and convenience store chain Buc-ee’s will break ground on a new Springfield, Missouri location next week. The new store will be the first location in Missouri.
The groundbreaking ceremony will be at noon Aug. 23. The store will be located at 3284 N. Mulroy Road and will occupy 53,000 square feet. Mayor Ken McClure and Springfield Councilman Abe McGull, along with other community leaders, plan to attend. The new gas station will feature 120 pumps and a wide variety of food and drink options.
“Springfield is the Birthplace of Route 66,” Stan Beard, Buc-ee’s director of real estate said in a news release. “It’s perfectly natural that Buc-ee’s, the ultimate road-trip destination, is coming to this gorgeous stretch of Americana history. We are delighted to be a part of this community and excited to make Springfield our first stop in Missouri.”
Buc-ee’s was founded in Texas in 1982 and began expanding to new states in 2019, opening stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee. Now in its 40th year, the company is opening stores in Colorado, along with the store in Missouri.
The new store will bring 200 new jobs to the Springfield area, and benefits include a 6% matching 401k and three weeks of paid vacation. Construction on the store will open up new land for development and create new utilities for the community to use.
Earlier this year, the city of Springfield agreed to reimburse Buc-ee’s $4 million of the $8.5 million it would spend to make the area suitable for development. Buc-ee’s has since sought more money in tax incentives to further offset these costs.
For some travelers, the destination of their journey will be the new Buc-ee’s, making Springfield a hotspot for what has been called the “Bass Pro of convenience stores.”
