(The Lion) — Many children’s lives across the globe end before they even begin.
Abortion was the leading cause of death globally in 2024, according to a new report.
Worldometer statistics say over 73 million abortions occurred worldwide in 2024. The organization collects data from governments and calculations from other organizations globally, according to Life News.
The World Health Organization, which supports legal abortion, concurs those numbers are accurate. “Around 73 million induced abortions take place worldwide each year,” the WHO website says.
Abortion was also the leading cause of death in 2023, with about 73 million happening.
“Outpacing global wars and diseases of mankind, abortion has stolen more innocent lives than them all,” Life Issues Institute President Brad Mattes said in a January 2024 statement.
About 29% of pregnancies globally end in abortion, including 61% of unwanted pregnancies, WHO reports.
Abortion generally results in more lives lost than every other cause of death combined. The world has about 67 million to 68 million deaths annually from causes other than abortion, according to WHO.
Typically, abortion is also the leading cause of death in the United States.
“In the USA, where nearly 30% of pregnancies are unintended, and 40% of these are terminated by abortion, there are between 1,500 to 2,500 abortions per day,” Worldometer wrote. “Nearly 20% of all pregnancies in the USA (excluding miscarriages) end in abortion.
Guttmacher Institute reports 930,160 abortions performed in 2020 in the United States, with a rate of 14.4 per 1,000 women.”
“The greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion,” Catholic saint Mother Teresa said at the 1994 National Prayer Breakfast, “because it is a war against the child, a direct killing of the innocent child, murder by the mother herself.
“And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love, and we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts.
“Jesus gave even His life to love us. So, the mother who is thinking of abortion should be helped to love, that is, to give until it hurts her plans or her free time, to respect the life of her child. The father of that child, whoever he is, must also give until it hurts.”
In the United States, elective abortion remains legal in 38 of 50 states.
