The Mexican military captured reputed cartel leader Audias Flores Silva in a stealth operation Monday without firing a shot.
Navy special forces located Silva, who is known as “El Jardinero,” or “the gardener,” hiding in a drainage ditch in the coastal state of Nayarit after approaching a cabin where he was hiding.
Silva was viewed as a potential successor to Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader “El Mencho,” who was killed in February. Cartel-fueled violence erupted in Puerto Vallarta following his death, and additional violence was reported after Silva’s capture.
President Donald Trump designated the cartel a foreign terrorist organization last year.
Silva is wanted in Mexico and the United States, with U.S. authorities offering a $5 million reward for his capture. Silva may face extradition, Mexico’s security chief, Omar Garcia Harfuch, posted Monday.
U.S. intelligence supported the February raid on El Mencho and provided intelligence including aerial surveillance for this operation.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has stepped up the government’s crackdown on cartels, which push drugs such as fentanyl into the U.S., following threats of intervention from Trump.
U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson said the arrest “marks an important step against those who profit from fentanyl and drive violence in our communities. Actions like this are essential to ensuring that those who traffic drugs are held accountable,” he wrote on X with an image of “Detained” written across Silva’s wanted poster.
