(The Lion) — A rural Maine school district is aligning with federal policy on gender, despite a lawsuit from the state Human Rights Commission.
The Jay school district, RSU 73, voted Thursday to keep its policy recognizing two genders and restricting sports participation based on biological gender.
This aligns with executive orders signed earlier this year by President Donald Trump, but conflicts with state law, which allows students to play sports based on their so-called “gender identity.”
Republican state Rep. Michael Soboleski urged the district to “hold the line, stay on course” and not be “bullied” by the state.
